Patriotic organization organized in 1867 in Worcester, Mass., honoring George H. Ward, lieutenant colonel with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteers who was wounded in action at Balls Bluff in Leesburg, Va., Oct. 21, 1862 and died in 1864 from wounds received at the Battle of Gettysburg. There were originally 11 charter members.
